Named after an undersung but richly historic area of Bristol, duo THE DINGS has been an idea in the head of drummer / electronic composer /filmmaker Tony Orrell since he first started working with trumpeter Pete Judge in sporadic jazz/improv contexts a couple of decades ago. Now, thanks to the limbo of lockdown, The Dings' music leaps into the world at last.

Here, Orrell eschews his legendarily unpredictable free improvisations in favour of hypnotic beats and carefully-crafted soundscapes, with influences ranging from Indian tala to Mary J Blige and Turkish pop. Judge, meanwhile, responds in a variety of unexpected ways, from harmonised brass chorales to painterly scribbles.

The results sit somewhere between jazz, electronica, and avant-pop, each piece inhabiting its own mood and flavour, like a distinctively-attired puppet springing into movement.
